Mohammad Zahir Shah succeeded to the throne and reigned from 1933 to 1973. Zahir's cousin, Mohammad Daoud, served as Prime Minister from 1953 to 1963. The Marxian People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) was credited significant growth in these years. In 1967, the PDPA split into two rival factions, the Khalq (Masses) faction headed by Nur Muhammad Taraki and Hafizullah Amin and the Parcham (Banner) faction led by Babrak Karmal.

 |  |  | 1978 - April: Encyclopedia II - Nur Muhammad Taraki - President of the Republic April 1978 -- October 1979 On April 19, 1978 a prominent leftist, Mir Akbar Khyber, was killed by the government of Mohammed Daoud Khan. His death served as a rallying point for the Afghan communists. Fearing a communist coup d'etat, Daud ordered the arrest of certain PDPA leaders, including Taraki and Babrak Karmal, while placing others such as Hafizullah Amin under house arrest.

In the late 1940s he worked in the press department of the Afghan government and in 1953 was appointed attaché at the Afghan embassy in Washington D.C.
