 | | | 1978: Encyclopedia II - Mitsubishi Mirage - 1978Mitsubishi launched the Mirage as a three-door, front-wheel-drive, hatchback in 1978, as a response to the first fuel crisis some years before. It had a distinctive design with large windows and Mitsubishi's 'Supershift' transmission (four speeds, but two modes). A five-door joined the range in 1979. This version of the Mirage was exported to the United States as the Dodge Colt and Plymouth Champ from 1979 and received the highest EPA fuel economy rating that year.

 | | | 1978: Encyclopedia II - Buick Regal - 1978A downsized Regal appeared for 1978 with a new turbocharged version of Buick's venerable 231 in³ (3.8L) V6, a combination that lasted 9 years and helped give the Regal an unexpected reputation for performance. Despite the model's newfound performance, it was still hampered (from a performance perspective) by a soft suspension, small wheels and tires and the unavailability of a manual transmission, largely because the intermediate personal luxury market was the Regal's intended ...

 | | | 1978: Encyclopedia II - Oldsmobile Cutlass - 1978The 1978 Cutlass moved to a new version of the G-body with a shorter wheelbase. A mild restyle came in 1981. This Cutlass was lighter than earlier versions at around 3300 lb (1500 kg). The G-body version offers enough engine compartment room for larger engine swaps quite easily and this is the best way to gain back performance from this emission-choked year. 455s from earlier years will fit with minimal modifications and if the car was originally a 260, the engine mounts will line up when swapping a 455. Some G-body Cutlasses were powered with a Chevrolet 305 (5.0 L) to which the popular 350 Che ...

 | | | 1978: Encyclopedia II - Chevrolet Monte Carlo - 1978All GM intermediate-sized cars including the Monte Carlo were downsized for the 1978 model year in response to the 1973 Arab Oil Embargo and CAFE requirements. The '78 model was 700-800 pounds lighter and some 15 inches shorter than the '77 version. The engine compartment was also smaller as the 350 and 400 cubic-inch V8s offered the previous year were dropped in favor of a standard 231 cubic-inch V6 built by Buick or optional Chevy 305 cubic-inch V8. The three-speed manual transmission reappeared for the first time in several years as stand ...

 | | | 1978: Encyclopedia II - List of astronauts by selection - 1978January 16 - 1978 NASA Group - USA
Due to the long delay between the last Apollo mission and the first flight of the Space Shuttle in 1981, only few astronauts from the older groups stayed with NASA. Thus in 1978 a new group of 35 astronauts was selected after 9 years without new astronauts, including the first female astronauts, and also the first black astronaut Guion Bluford. Roughly every two years a new group was selected since then. Two different astronaut groups were formed, pilots and mission specialists. Addition ...
