1973: Encyclopedia II - Buick Regal - 1973

Buick had been the first GM division to bring a personal luxury car to market with its fullsize 1963 Riviera but was otherwise slow to react to the developing mid-size personal luxury market, which Pontiac created with the 1969 Grand Prix. Buick introduced the Regal in 1973, technically as an upmarket variant of the Century, to move them more seriously into the category. A highly-trimmed, notchback coupe, the first Regal shared its front and rear styling with the Century, but its greenhouse (window area) with the Grand Prix, Chevrolet ...

1973: Encyclopedia II - Buick Century - 1973

In 1973, when all GM's intermediate models were redesigned, the name reappeared on Buick's mid-size sedans and wagons and some coupes. (Previously the Skylark had been Buick's entry in this market segment.) From this point on, along with the new upmarket Regal coupe, Century was a mainstay of Buick's smaller line. With the vanishing of the Skylark coupe after 1972, the Century inherited its potent Gran Sport performance option. While the Stage I 455 in³ (7.5 L) V8 was somewhat diminished from its performance heyday due to emission controls, ...

1973: Encyclopedia II - Mitsubishi Lancer - 1973

The Lancer (LA series in Australia, where it was called the Chrysler Valiant Lancer initially) was first launched in 1973 and proved to be particularly successful in rallies, a claim that it retains today. At the time of its launch, Mitsubishi had its keicar, the Minica, and the mid-size Galant, so it made sense to have a compact to fill the gap in the growing Japanese concern. Twelve models were launched, ranging from a 1200 cm³ basic sedan to the powerful 1600 GSR model. See also:

1973: Encyclopedia II - Oldsmobile Cutlass - 1973

The Cutlass was redesigned for 1973-1977 using GM's new "Colonnade" A-body platform. The model lineup consisted of the Cutlass "S", Cutlass Supreme, Cutlass Salon, Vista Cruiser station wagon, and the 442 appearance package on the Cutlass "S" colonnade coupe. The Cutlass Salon was added in 1975 as an upscale model - this was the first Oldsmobile with the 'international' flags emblem which was later carried into the Cutlass Ciera line. For 1975, Cutlasses used the Oldsmobile 260 V8 with a 5 speed manual transmission (T-50 - optioned in 1976 and 1977) or optional ...

1973: Encyclopedia II - Chevrolet K5 Blazer - 1973

In 1973, GM's line of full size trucks were redesigned and updated. Although two wheel drive Blazers were manufactured until 1982, the majority sold were four wheel drive. Until 1976, the K5 had a removable convertible top. After this, a half-cab design was used until 1991. Although the GMT400 platform was introduced in the spring of 1987 as a 1988 model, the K5 Blazer, Suburban, and crew-cab trucks retained the earlier platform until 1991. In 1989, the front grille was changed to resemble the squared-of ...

The truck was redesigned in 1973 with an automatic transmission option. Other changes included the introduction of the Twin I-Beam suspension, a name that is still used, and the 1974 introduction of the extended super cab version. A luxury Lariat trim was introduced for 1978. That same year, the F-series became the best-selling vehicle in America, a position it has continued to hold since. 1973: Encyclopedia II - Pontiac Grand Prix - 1973

All A-bodies, including the Grand Prix, were redesigned for 1973. This generation was larger and heavier, due partly to the federally-mandated 5 mph (8 km/h) crash bumpers. Although large V8s were still available, performance was on the decline due to another federal standard—a new emissions control system. The most notable styling feature of this generation was the appearance of the fixed opera window, replacing the previous disappearing rear side glass. Front and rear styling of the 1973 Grand Prix turned out be an evolution of ...

1973: Encyclopedia II - Chevrolet Monte Carlo - 1973

A redesigned Monte Carlo was introduced alongside other GM intermediates. Like other GM mid-sized cars, the '73 Monte was no longer a hardtop, but a pillared coupe with rear side opera windows and frameless door glass. Prominent styling features included dual headlights flanking an eggcrate grille with a Monte Carlo emblem in front and vertical-like tailights in rear above the bumper. The front bumper was a large Federally-mandated 5 mile-per-hour bumper that was among the required 1973 federal safety standards for all passenger cars sold in ...

The Chilean coup d'état of September 11, 1973 was a watershed event in the history of Chile and the Cold War. Historians and partisans alike have wrangled over its implications ever since. In Chile's 1970 presidential election, in accordance with the constitution, Congress resolved the 3-way split — between Salvador Allende (with 36.3% of the vote), conservative (and former president) Jorge Alessandri Rodríguez (35.8%), and the Christian Democrat Radomiro Tomic (27.9%) — by voting to approve Allende's narrow plurality. 1973: Encyclopedia - 1973 oil crisis

The 1973 oil crisis began in earnest on October 17, 1973, when Arab members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), during the Yom Kippur War, announced that they would no longer ship petroleum to nations that had supported Israel in its conflict with Syria and Egypt -- that is, to the United States and its allies in Western Europe. At around the same time, OPEC members agreed to use their leverage over the world price-setting mechanism for oil in order to quadruple world oil prices. The complete dependence ...
