Provisional National Council Minister-President Kurt Eisner declared Bavaria to be a free state on November 7, 1918. Munich became a hotbed of extremism: a Bavarian Soviet Republic, the Münchner Räterepublik, had a short-lived existence, but inspired fearful reactions: the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch involving Erich Ludendorff and Adolf Hitler took place in the same city. For most of the Weimar Republic, though, Bavaria was dominated by the relat ...

 | | | 1957 - December: Encyclopedia II - Radio Luxembourg - HistoryLuxembourg was special, because while radio stations all over Europe were exclusively government-owned and operated well into the 1980s, Radio Luxembourg was right from the beginning privately owned. A radio amateur (Ham) managed to get a licence in 1924 and used the license to broadcast military music, too. French businessmen bought the license from the radio amateur in May 1929 and managed to get a broadcasting monopoly in Luxembourg in November 1929. In May 1931 the Compagnie Luxembourgeoise de Radiodiffusion was founded, which started to build the transmitters. Transmis ...

 | | | 1957 - December: Reflections on the Dream Traditions of IslamMeaning of Dreams in Islam
Few Western dream researchers have any familiarity with the rich dream traditions of Islam. The Muslim faith first emerged in seventh
century B.C.E. Arabia as a profound revisioning of early Jewish and Christian
beliefs and practices. One theme the Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) drew from the
scriptures of those two religions was a reverence for dreaming. In the Quran,
as in the Jewish Torah and the Christian New Testament, dreams serve as a vital
medium by which God communicates with humans. Dreams offer divine guidance and
comfort, warn people of impending danger, and offer prophetic glimpses of the
future. Although the three religions drastically differ on many other topics,
they find substantial agreement on this particular point: dreaming is a
valuable source of wisdom, understanding, and inspiration. Indeed, as I will
propose in this brief essay, Islam has historically shown greater interest in
dreams than either of the other two traditions, and has done more to weave
dreaming into the daily lives of its members. From the first revelatory visions
of Muhammed to the myriad dream practices of present-day Muslims, Islam has developed and sustained a complex, multifaceted tradition of
active engagement with the dreaming imagination.

 | | | 1957 - December: Encyclopedia II - Radio Luxembourg - TriviaFor many years, due to British advertising restrictions, Radio Luxembourg was the only station available in the UK that could advertise tampons.
By the 1980s Luxembourg claimed to be broadcasting with 1.3 megawatts, making it the world's single most powerful commercial broadcaster in the medium wave range, at least in terms of individual transmitter power. It was certainly the most powerful commercial medium wave station in Europe, at least. The transmitter of Radio Luxembourg is situated in Marnach. Only some governmental stations, e.g. Transmitter Solt in Hungary and the Voice of Russia, used higher pow ...

 | | | 1957 - December: Encyclopedia II - Bavaria - PoliticsBavaria has a unicameral Landtag, or state parliament, elected by universal suffrage. Until December 1999, there was also a Senat, or Senate, whose members were chosen by social and economic groups in Bavaria, but following a referendum in 1998, this institution was abolished. The head of government is the Minister-president.
Bavaria has long been a bastion of conservative politics in Germany, with the Christian Social Union having almost a stranglehold on power since its inception in 1946. Every Minister-president since 1 ...
