1950s: Encyclopedia II - Sun Ra - 1950s

Sun Ra's recording career as a bandleader began in Chicago, in the early 1950s. The first period of the 1950s was when his music evolved from big-band swing into the outer-space-themed "cosmic jazz" for which he was best known. Music critics and jazz historians say some of his best work was recorded during this period. Sun Ra's music in this era was often tightly arranged, and sometimes reminiscent of Duke Ellington's, Count Basie's, or other important swing music ensembles. There were, however, touches of the exotic and hints of the experimentalism that ...

American rock - Covers: Early 50s. Through the late 1940s and early 1950s, rhythm and blues music had been gaining a stronger beat and a wilder style, with artists such as Fats Domino and Johnny Otis speeding up the tempos and increasing the backbeat to great popularity on the juke-joint circuit. Despite the pioneering efforts of Freed and others, black music was still taboo on many white-owned radio outlets. However, savvy artists and producers quickly recognized the popularity and potential of rock and roll and ...

In its first incarnation in 1954 as the Morning Show, Walter Cronkite was teamed with a lion puppet name Charlemane. Cronkite, a gag writer, and his puppet sidekick were expected to compete against the NBC's Today Show, then hosted by Dave Garroway and featuring a chimpanzee sidekick called J. Fred Muggs. Cronkite was still early in his network career, and like his lion puppet, came across to viewers as stiff. In the following 18 months after Cronkite was dismissed from the program, CBS tried a number of names: Jack Paar ...

Early in the morning of June 26, 1950, a small red boat skipped across Lake Washington, near Seattle, and improved on Campbell’s record by 18 mph (29 km/h). The boat was called Slo-Mo-Shun-IV, and it was built by Seattle Chrysler dealer called Stanley Sayres. The piston-engined boat was able to run at 160 mph because it’s hull was designed to lift the top of the propellers out of water when running at high speed. This phenomenon, cal ...

Television producers were in love with sports, which provided the viewer with an opportunity to observe sporting events life, and boxing was n ...
