1940: Mysticism Magick Dictionary on AQUARIUS

AQUARIUS

The 11th sign, the number of wizardry - electronic as well as esoteric. The sign of astronomy, no less than astrology, and above all the sign of independence and service to the world. The new precessional beginning of the zodiac, heading the New Age. It is the emblem and inspiration of "Man": "Henceforth the Son of Man appeareth in the heavens..." In 1929 Jung wrote that we would enter the first star of Aquarius in 1940, adding "That would be the turning point. We may look for a new development about that time." The fact that 1940 marked the entry into a lustrum that encompassed the nadir of humanity indicates that the "Age of Man" is the Kali Yuga.

Famous Aquarians are Lincoln, Thomas Paine, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Edison, Lindbergh, Dickens, and Jules Verne.

1940: New Age Spirituality Dictionary on Chogyam Trungpa

Chogyam Trungpa

(1940-87) Tibetan teacher noted for his propagation of Tibetan Buddhism in North America.

Trungpa was recognized as the eleventh Trungpa tulku ("incarnate lama"), an important line of Kagyu tulkus who presided over the Surmang monasteries in eastern Tibet. He was found and enthroned when he was eighteen months old, was subsequently ordained, and received the rigorous training reserved for high tulkus. He fled Chinese-occupied Tibet in 1959, first working in India under appointment by the Dalai Lama, then traveling to England in 1963, where he relinquished his monastic vows, married, and taught Tibetan Buddhism and its contemplative practices to Westerners.

Arriving in the United States in 1970, Trungpa spent the next seventeen years teaching, writing, founding contemplative centers, and inaugurating various organizations, including the Vajradhatu association of (Tibetan) Buddhist churches (Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada), the Naropa Institute, an upper division accredited college (Boulder, Colorado), the Nalanda Translation Committee (Halifax and Boulder), and Shambhala Training, a nonsectarian program in meditation.

Trungpa was known for his innovative, sometimes unconventional approach to transmitting Buddhism to the West and for his insistance that meditation is the cornerstone of Buddhism.

1940: New Age Spirituality Dictionary on Alien

Alien

An intelligent extraterrestrial being; of extraterrestrial origin; non-human. A visitor from another planet, another world or dimension.

Eyewitnesses report a number of different types of alien creatures; in fact, they vary in almost every imaginable way. These reports have been around for centuries, but the number of sightings have increase dramatically since the first flying saucers were seen in the late 1940's. And the aliens come in a baffling variety of shapes and sizes. Surprisingly, however, the aliens themselves are not so very different from human beings - most have two arms, two legs, and one head. For this reason some ufologists doubt their existence: surely, they say, visitors from outer space would not look so much like ourselves.

The late Carl Sagan , astronomer and author of ' The Cosmic Connection: An Extraterrestrial Perspective ', believes that the aliens sighted were "stodgy in their unimaginativeness" and were hence the inhabitants of human minds, not extraterrestrial spaceships. But whatever the experts may say, close encounters of the third kind continue to be reported till this day. See alien abductions, alien autopsy, men in black, UFO, area 51, flying saucer, grays.

1940: Mysticism Magick Dictionary on ARACHNE

ARACHNE

The Spider. 13th month of the proposed "Newtime" calendar to begin at the winter solstice of 2000 A.D. From a possible corruption of the early pagan or Druidic "Aranea". 13th zodiacal sign, Auriga, the Charioteer. That there were originally 13 signs in the zodiac goes back, among other possible source, to Osiris' body being dismembered into 13 parts. Or rather, the other way, around: this myth, amongst others, should perhaps be seen as celestial in origin. References should be made to James Vogh's "Arachne Rising", wherein he points out that Auriga (or Arachne), lying as it does midway between Taurus and Gemini, is the logical place for the 13th sign and appears to have been so designated by the Druids.

There are others who cite Ophiuchus, the Serpent Holder, as the more logical 13th month. Ophiuchus (between Scorpio and Sagittarius) is even cited by some as the Age we are now inhabiting, rather than Pisces or Aquarius, and that it began in the early 1940's. (See AQUARIUS).

1940: What is Biofeedback?

The word "biofeedback" was coined in the late 1969 to describe laboratory procedures that trained research subjects to alter brain activity, blood pressure, muscle tension, heart rate and other bodily functions that are not normally controlled voluntarily. Biofeedback is a training technique in which people are taught to improve their health and performance by using signals from their own bodies.

1940: Reincarnation Is Quite True - II

Kamlesh Kumari Devi, alias Gita Murti, commenced preaching the Gita at the age of two and a half years. She was born on Tuesday, the 12th of December, 1939. The ideas of the transmigration of soul and eternity of life, although recorded in our holy scriptures, are dormant and latent in our practical life.

The death and dying and the life after death has always fascinated man. This is an excerpt from the book What Becomes Of The Soul After Death by Sri Swami Sivananda.
