From 1919-1922 Dáil Éireann (English: Assembly of Ireland) was the revolutionary, unicameral parliament of the unilaterally declared Irish Republic of the same period. The Dáil was first formed by Sinn Féin MPs elected in the 1918 United Kingdom general election who refused to recognise the British parliament at Westminster and chose instead to unilaterally establish an independent legislature in Dublin. The convention of the First Dáil coincided with the beginning of the War of Independence. The First Dáil was rep ...

1921: Encyclopedia - United Ireland

A United Ireland is the common demand of Irish nationalists, envisaging that the island of Ireland (currently divided into the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland) be reunited as a single political entity. Nationalists have suggested many different models for unification, including federalism, and joint sovereignty, as well as a unitary state. Although nationalists and republicans wish for the reunification of Ireland, the island of Ireland has never existed as a single sovereign political state in the modern sense. Howeve ...

1921: Encyclopedia II - Canadian federal election 1921 - Majority or minority?

The government that King formed in the parliament resulting from this election is often referred to as Canada's first minority government. Despite the fact that King's party won a bare majority of seats at the election, this is infact correct as, due to the close numbers, resignations occassionally changed the parliament from a bare majority to bare minority. However, this was never permanent as the Liberals never lost a by-election which threatened their majority. They did, in fact, lose 2 by-elections to Conservative candidates, how ...

1921: Encyclopedia II - Church of Scotland Act 1921 - Background

The Church of Scotland was established as a Presbyterian church, with Presbyterianism the state religion of Scotland. Since the Reformation, the Church of Scotland had held that the civil power had no authority over the Church. However, this had led to conflicts with successive rulers, from the Stuart monarchs onward. Monarchs tended to prefer the model of the Church of England, where the Crown had the power to appoint bishops, and various other forms of power over the Church (although it was not re ...

1921: Encyclopedia II - Russian famine of 1921 - The international relief effort

Although no official request for aid was issued, a committee of well-known people without obvious party affiliations was allowed to set up an appeal for assistance. In July 1921 the writer Maxim Gorky published an appeal to the outside world, claiming that millions of lives were menaced by crop failure. At a conference in Geneva on 15 August organised by the International Committee of the Red Cross and the League of Red Cross Societies, the International Committee for Russian Relief (ICCR) was set up with Dr Fridtjof Nansen as its High Commi ...

1921: Encyclopedia II - Church of Scotland Act 1921 - Current position

This has created a new and revised relationship between the Church and the State. The Church of Scotland remains the National Church, but it has complete independence in spiritual questions and appointments. After the passing of the act, a church historian proclaimed: "No Church in Christendom can so fully claim to be at once national and free as the Church of Scotland today." As a result, it is not usual in Scotl ...

1921: Encyclopedia II - Second Dáil - Elections of 1921

See Irish elections, 1921 In 1920, in the middle of the Anglo-Irish War, the British Government passed the Government of Ireland Act. This was intended to find a solution to the "Irish problem" by partitioning Ireland into two parts, each of which would have a separate home rule parliament. In 1921 the first elections were held to these new bodies. One general election occurred to the House of Commons of Northern Ireland, and another to the House of Commons of Southern Ireland. In both jurisdictions the elect ...
