 | | | 1919: Encyclopedia II - Armenian Genocide - Military trials, Istanbul, 1919
Many of those responsible for the genocide were sentenced to death in absentia, having escaped trial in 1918. The accused succeeded in destroying the majority of the documents that could be used as evidence against them before they escaped. Admiral Calthorpe, the British High Commissioner, described the destruction of documents:
“Just before the Armistice, officials had been going to the archives departmen ...

 | | | 1919: Encyclopedia II - Tanks 1919-1939 - Soviet UnionThe Soviet Union initially had only a mix of imports and a few domestic tanks developed from the FTs in the 1920s, but Stalin's enthusiasm for industrialisation and mechanisation drove an aggressive military development program, resulting in by far the largest and broadest tank inventory of all nations by the late 1930s.
In 1926, under a secret annex to the Treaty of Rapallo, the Soviet Union and Germany set up a joint tank school at Kazan in the west of the Urals, which was illegal under the Treaty of Versailles. Both countries learn ...

 | | | 1919: Encyclopedia II - Red Scare - The Red SummerA series of bombings in June of 1919 sparked the FBI to more aggressive actions. The mayor of Seattle received a homemade bomb in the mail on April 28, which was defused. Senator Thomas W. Hardwick received a bomb the next day, which blew off the hands of his servant who had discovered it, severely burning him and his wife. The following morning, a New York City postal worker discovered sixteen similar packages addressed to well-known people of the time, including oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller. There were 38 bombs in all, sent to prominent ...

 | | | 1919: Encyclopedia II - 1910s - Events and trendsThe 1910s represent the culmination of European militarism which had its beginings during the second half of the 19th Century. The conservative lifestyles during the first half of the decade, as well as the legacy of military alliances, would forever be changed by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir to the Austrian throne, on 28 June 1914. The murder would trigger a chain of events in which, within 30 days, war would break out in Europe, as well as other regions of the world. The long, wide, and protracted conflict ...

 | | | 1919: Spiritual Insight in Tagore's Works One of Rabindranath Tagore's most memorable poems begins with the line: The world is insane with violence, every day there emerges a new kind of cruel conflict. He goes on to pray to the Almighty to instil love and wisdom into a world afflicted with myriad ills. This reflects the core of Tagore's spiritual humanism. Stressing the need for spiritual freedom, he referred to the uncontrolled excesses of passion that upset our balance and obscure the underlying harmony between the individual and universal spirit. This malady, which he called 'sin', distorts our freedom in the realms of matter, mind and spirit. | | | 1919: Encyclopedia II - Empress Kojun - MarriageThe January 1919 engagement of Princess Nagako to her distant cousin then-Crown Prince Hirohito was unusual in two respects. First, she was a princess of the imperial blood (albeit a minor one), whereas for centuries the chief consorts of Japanese emperors and crown princes had come one of the five senior branches of the Fujiwara clan (Konoe, Ichijō, Nijō, Takatsukasa, and Kujō), the most illustrious families of the court nobility or kuge. Second, although Princess Nagako's father was an offshoot of the imperial family, her mother descended from daimyo, the feudal or military aristocracy.

R.S.C. Anderlecht - The first years 1908--1935.
Founded as Sporting Club Anderlechtois in 1908 by some football fans at the Concordia café (rue d'Aumale in Anderlecht, a municipality of Brussels), the club beat Institut Saint-Georges on its first match (11-8). As they were winning most of their matches, the secretary decided to join the official competition in 1909. They began at the regional level and at the end of the season, they had already qualified to play in the higher division. In 1913, the ...

 | | | 1919: Encyclopedia II - Republic of Ireland - NameMain article: Names of the Irish state
The constitution provides that the name of the state is "Éire, or, in the English language, Ireland." However the state is commonly referred to as the "Republic of Ireland" in order to distinguish it from the island of Ireland as a whole. The name Republic of Ireland came into use after the Republic of Ireland Act defined it as the official "description" of the state in 1949 (the purpose of the act being to declare that the state was a republic rather than a form of constitutional ...
