1917: Encyclopedia II - Grigory Zinoviev - 1917

Zinoviev spent WWI in Switzerland. After the Russian monarchy was overthrown during the February Revolution, he returned to Russia in April 1917 in a sealed train with Lenin and other revolutionaries opposed to the war. He remained a part of the Bolshevik leadership throughout most of that year and, with Lenin, was forced into hiding after an abortive coup attempt in July 1917. However, Zinoviev and Lenin soon had a falling out over Zinoviev's opposition to the Bolshevik seizure of power in October. On October 10, 1917 (Old Style), he and Le ...

After Lenin's return to Russia on April 3, 1917, Kamenev briefly resisted Lenin's anti-government April Theses, but soon fell in line ...

1917: Encyclopedia II - Conscription Crisis of 1917 - Background

At the outbreak of war in 1914, over 30,000 volunteers joined the army, far more than expected. This first contingent of 30,000, which became the 1st Canadian Division of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, was assembled at a new camp in Valcartier, Quebec, grouped into numbered battalions, regardless of language or religion. The existing reserve regiments were not mobilized, due to the belief of the Defence Minister, Sam Hughes, that a new "efficient" structure was required. In the process, the new structure failed to create French-speak ...

1917: Encyclopedia II - Russian Revolution of 1917 - Causes of the Russian Revolution

The Russian Revolution was one of the most important events in modern world history. Its impact was evident in both Europe and America. Although the revolution did not directly spread communism, it did give various other struggling third world countries an enticing example to follow. Decades later, the philosophy/governmental model would gain new notoriety as Russia, a full communist state at the time of the Cold War, squared off with the United States. In any case, 1917 saw two distinct Revolutions in Russia: the overthrow of the cza ...

1917: Encyclopedia II - Russian Revolution of 1917 - The Russian revolution and the world

There are some who say that the Russian revolution was intended to spread across the world. Lenin and Trotsky said that the goal of socialism in Russia would not be realized without the success of the world proletariat in other countries, e.g. without German Revolution. However, till this day, this issue is subject to conflicting views on the communist history by various Marxist groups and parties. Some state that it was Stalin who was the f ...

1917: Encyclopedia II - Balfour Declaration 1917 - Negotiation

One of the main Jewish figures who negotiated the granting of the declaration was Dr. Chaim Weizmann, the leading spokesman for organized Zionism in Britain. During the first meeting between Chaim Weizmann and Balfour, in 1906, the Unionist leader was impressed by Weizman's personality. Balfour asked Weizmann why Palestine—and Palestine alone—could be the basis for Zionism. "Anything else would be idolatry", Weizmann protested, adding: "Mr. Balfour, supposing I were to offer you Paris instead of London, would you take it?" "But Dr. Weizm ...

1917: Encyclopedia II - Russian Revolution of 1917 - World War 1

Russia's recent history catalogued successive military failures. Even before the outbreak of WW1, Russia had engaged in war with Japan in 1904-05, to great expense and no gain. While the Russian army enjoyed some initial successes against Austria-Hungary in 1914, Russia's deficiencies — particularly regarding the equipment of its soldiers and the sophistication of its weapons — became increasingly evident. In 1915, things took a critical turn for the worse when Nicholas decided to take direct command of the army, personally overse ...
