1895 births: Encyclopedia II - Lewis Mumford - Life

Mumford was born in Flushing, New York, and studied at Stuyvesant High School, the City College of New York and the New School for Social Research, yet never earned a degree. In 1919 he became associate editor of the Dial and wrote architectural criticisms and commentary on urban issues. His early writings established him as an authority in US architecture and urban life, which he interpreted in a social context. In these writings, Mumford was optimistic about human abilities and wrote that the human race would use electricity and mass communication to build a better world for all humankind. He would ...

1895 births: Encyclopedia II - Zog of Albania - Political legacy

During World War II, royalist resistance in northern Albania was largely ineffective, later merging with communist insurgents (partisans). While the Albanian establishment mostly opted for collaboration with the Italians and Germans, it was the partisans who took control of the country. They were able to defeat the last nazi remnants, as the war ended. Zog attempted to reclaim his throne after the war but Albania now had a communist government led by Enver Hoxha who remained in power for 45 years. A referendum in 1997 proposed to rest ...

1895 births: Encyclopedia II - Plínio Salgado - Integralism

Salgado adapted Fascist and Nazi symbolism and salutes and wore a square mustache like Adolf Hitler. His movement had all the trappings of European fascism. With a green-shirted paramilitary organization with uniformed ranks, highly regimented street demonstrations, and aggressive rhetoric directly financed in part by the Italian embassy, the Integralists borrowed their propaganda campaigns directly from Nazi materials —including the usual traditionalist excoriations of Marxism, liberalism, and Jews and espousals of fanatical nationalism (out of context in heterogeneou ...

1895 births: Encyclopedia II - Lázaro Cárdenas - Presidential career

Calles continued to dominate Mexico after his presidency with administrations that were his puppets. He selected Cárdenas to be the ruling party's presidential candidate on the assumption that he could control Cárdenas as he had controlled others. Cárdenas's first move once he took office late in 1934 was to have his presidential salary cut in half. Even more surprising moves would follow. After establishing himself in the presidency, Cárdenas had Calles and dozens of his corrupt associates arrested or deported to the United States, a decision that was greeted wit ...
