The Nanaimo mine explosion on May 3, 1887, in Nanaimo, British Columbia killed 150 miners and was the largest man-made explosion in the world until the Halifax Explosion. From 1884-1990, there were 44 tornadoes with school fatalities in the United States. These tornadoes killed 263 (not including the 9 from the probable downburst in New York state).
