1883: Encyclopedia II - History of Test cricket to 1883 - Genesis of Test cricket

There was a long build up to what became the first Test tour. The first overseas tour of leading English cricketers was planned by John Frederick Sackville, 3rd Duke of Dorset, who was a strong player himself. Dorset, who had recently been ambassador to France, where he had promoted cricket, arranged a tour there in 1789. Whilst it is unclear who they were going to play, the team did get as far as being assembled in Dover ready for the cross-Channel trip to France. His timing was poor, though! The French Revolution had just broken out, and th ...

Originally two Englishmen tried to promote separate tours to Australia for 1876/7. James Lillywhite promoted a tour professional cricketers. GF Grace promoted a tour that would have included amateurs. Despite many initial preparations being made for Grace's tour, it fell through, leaving Lillywhite's team as the only one to go. The highlight of Lillywhite's tour was to be two games against a Combin ...

1883: Encyclopedia - Karl Benz

Karl Friedrich Benz (November 25, 1844 – April 4, 1929) was a German automobile engineer. He is generally regarded as one of the inventors (with contemporary Gottlieb Daimler) of the petrol-powered automobile. Born in a modest home and a prodigy student, Karl Benz loved to ride his bicycle through his natal Karlsruhe and since then he pursued the dream of creating some motorized vehicle to replace it. Something finally accomplished with his Tri-Car of 1886 powered by a gas engine, and later by petrol. Though the genius also invented -- among other things - ...

1883: Encyclopedia - Édouard Roche

Édouard Albert Roche (1820-1883) was a French scientist. He is famous for his theory that the planetary rings of Saturn were formed when a large moon came too close to Saturn and was pulled apart by gravitational forces. He also gave his name to both the Roche limit as well as the unrelated concept of the Roche lobe, a useful concept when dealing with the gravitational interaction of a binary star system. Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel (August 19, 1883 – January 10, 1971) was a pioneering French couturier whose modernist philosophy, menswear-inspired fashions, and pursuit of expensive simplicity made her arguably the most important figure in the history of 20th-century fashion design. Popularly known as Coco Chanel or "Mademoiselle" by her inner circle, she was born in the small city of Saumur, France in 1883, although she asserted she was born in 1893, in Auvergne. Her mother died when Chanel was six, and shortly afterward h ...

1883: Encyclopedia - Alexander Kazbegi

Alexander Kazbegi (1848-1893) was a Georgian writer, famous for his 1883 novel The Patricide. The book is about a heroic Caucasian bandit named Koba, who, much like Robin Hood, is a defender of the poor. Koba has nothing but contempt for authority, a proclivity towards violence, and a firm belief in vengeance. Kazbegi's work was a major inspiration to Iosef Djugashvili, later known as Stalin, who used Koba as a revolutionary pseudonym. Other related archives1848, 1883, 1893, Cau

1883: Encyclopedia II - Krakatoa - The 1883 Eruption

Prior to Krakatoa's massive eruption of 1883, the volcano lay dormant for two centuries. In the years preceding the event, seismic activity around the volcano was intense, with some earthquakes felt as far distant as Australia. Beginning 20 May 1883, three months before the final explosion, steam venting began to occur on a regular basis. By early August, three vents were regularly erupting on Krakatoa; tides in the vicinity were unusually high, and ships at anchor were moored with chains as a result. 11 August saw the onset of larger ...

1883: Encyclopedia II - Manitoba Liberal Party - Origins and early development to 1883

Originally, there were no official political parties in Manitoba, although many leading politicians were affiliated with parties that existed at the national level. In Manitoba's first Legislative Assembly, the leader of the opposition was Edward Hay, a Liberal who represented the interests of recent anglophone immigrants from Ontario. Not a party leader as such, he was still a leading voice for the newly-transplanted "Ontario Grit" tradition. In 1874, Hay served as Minister of Public Works in the g ...

1883: Encyclopedia II - UMIST - The Mechanics' Institute 1824-1882

The foundation of UMIST can be traced to 1824 during the Industrial revolution when a group of Manchester businessmen and industrialists met in a pub, the Bridgewater Arms, to establish the Mechanics' Institute in Manchester, where artisans could learn basic science, particularly mechanics and chemistry. Hundreds of such institutions were founded in towns and cities throughout the country and while many of the fine Victorian buildings built to house them remain, Manchester's alone survived as an independent institution serving some ...

1883: Encyclopedia II - Nickel U.S. coin - Westward Journey nickel series

Throughout the 20th century, Congress allowed the U.S. Mint to make changes to coinage every 25 years without specific authorization. Since the 1990s the government had begun to respond to lobbying in favor of changing coinage design. This led to the State Quarters series and in 2002, a proposal to change 2003 nickels as well. Initial proposals by the Mint had a new obverse based on a portrait by Gilbert Stuart, ...
