1863: Encyclopedia II - Stonewall Brigade - 1863

At Chancellorsville, the brigade was part of Isaac R. Trimble's division and participated in Stonewall Jackson's audacious flanking movement of May 2, 1863. The brigade attacked on the Confederate right flank along the Orange Plank Road, falling in behind J.E.B. Stuart's cavalry. More than 600 men out of 2,000 were killed or wounded, and among the killed was General Paxton. This was the same night that Stonewall Jackson was mortally wounded. The men of the brigade were devastated to learn that their hero had been struck down by friendly fire and they renewed their ...

1863: Encyclopedia II - List of elections in the Province of Canada - 1863

The final election for the Province of Canada took place in 1863. Conservatives supported a greater confederation, but Liberals opposed it. Eventually George Brown led a group of Canada West Liberals to form a coalition with the Conservatives, and began the discussions on the confederation of all of the British North America colonies. The confederation project received wide support from Canada West, general opposition from the maritimes and Canada East was divided. Confederation, was eventually achieved when 3 of the 6 co ...

1863: Encyclopedia II - VI Corps ACW - 1863

At Fredericksburg, December 13, 1862, only a few regiments of the corps were engaged, although all were under severe artillery fire. But the corps was engaged on the same field, May 3, 1863, in an action that made it famous with a brilliant display of dash and daring. When Joseph Hooker took the Army of the Potomac to Chancellorsville he left the VI Corps in front of Fredericksburg, which was still held by a strong force of the enemy. General Sedgwick, who had succeeded to the corps command, ordered an assault on Marye's Heights, and that st ...

1863: Encyclopedia II - V Corps ACW - 1863

When Hooker took command of the Army of the Potomac in the spring, he did away with the "grand divisions" and made Butterfield his chief of staff. Major General George G. Meade, formerly commanding the 3rd Division of the I Corps, took charge of the V Corps. It was at this time that each corps was designated a symbol; the V Corps used a cross pattée, the straight-edged variant of the Maltese Cross. The V Corps was not significantly engaged at Chancellorsville, but soon after the entire 3rd Division had their enlistments expire ...

The Battle of Day’s Gap was the first “battle” in a series of skirmishes during the American Civil War, which occurred on April 30 1863 (the skirmishes lasted from April 30 1863 to May 2 1863). Commanding the Union forces was Colonel Abel Streight, while Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest led the confederate forces. The battles took place in Cullman County, Alabama. The goal of Col. Streight’s raid was to cut off the Western & Atlantic Railroad that supplied General Braxton’s Bragg’s Confederate army in Mi ...

1863: Encyclopedia - Azazel

Azazel (Hebrew: עזאזאל, Arabic: عزازل azazil) is an enigmatic name from the Hebrew scriptures, possibly referring to a fallen angel or Satan. The word's first appearances are in Leviticus 16, when in the ritual for Yom Kippur the scapegoat is to be taken to Azazel and cast into the wilderness, but this text by itself is unclear as to the actual identity of Azazel. The Talmud (Yoma 67b) and later commentators maintain Azazel was the name of the precipitous cliff where the goat met its end. This version is cited by Biblical commentator Rashi and it is considered ...

Although slated to strengthen Rear Admiral David Farragut's West Gulf Blockading Squadron for forthcoming operations against Confederate fortifications guarding Mobile Bay, Tecumseh was ordered to serve temporarily with the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron, then sorely taxed by General Ulysses S. Grant's operations against Richmond, Virginia — particularly by Major General Benjamin F. Butler's planned landing to establish a bridgehead across the James at Bermuda Hundred. Early in May, she was assigned to the James River Flotilla; and she ascended the river to guard Union s ...

Temple was elected to the State House, and served in the 1845/46 session as Speaker. After the deaths of Governor Thomas Stockton and Acting Governor Joseph Maull he became Acting Governor himself on May 6, 1846. He served until January 19, 1847. No sooner had he inherited the job than came a call to raise troops for the Mexican War, then just beginning. Much of Temple's short tenure was spent on this task. Following his time as Acting Governor he was elected to the Delaware Senate and served from the 1849/50 session through the 1853/ ...

1863: Encyclopedia II - Cemetery Hill - July 2 1863

On July 2, Confederate General Robert E. Lee ordered attacks on both ends of the Union line. Lt. Gen. James Longstreet attacked with his First Corps on the Union left (Little Round Top, Devil's Den, Wheatfield, etc.). Lt. Gen. Richard S. Ewell and the Second Corps were assigned the mission of launching a simultaneous demonstration against the Union right, a minor attack that was intended to distract and pin down the Union defenders against Longstreet. Ewell was to exploit any success his demonstration might achieve by following up with a ful ...

1863: Encyclopedia II - Culp's Hill - July 2 1863

On the morning of July 2, the XII Corps arrived and fortified the hill. Brigadier General George S. Greene, who at 62 was the oldest Union general on the field, was a brigade commander in the division of Maj. Gen. John W. Geary. As a civil engineer before the war, he had a natural understanding of the value of defensive works. His division and corps commanders did not believe they would be stationed at Culp's Hill very long and did not share his enthusiasm for constructing breastworks, but did not oppose his efforts. He set his troops to the task of felling trees and collecting rocks and earth to ...

1863: Encyclopedia II - Fort Sumter - 1863–1865

With Fort Sumter in Confederate hands, the port of Charleston was a hole in the Federal naval blockade of the Atlantic coast. For the U.S. Navy to close the port, Fort Sumter would need to be retaken, and Rear Admiral Samuel F. Du Pont was ordered to take it. On the afternoon of April 7, 1863, nine ironclads exchanged fire with Confederate batteries in the fort and around the harbor. The fort was barely damaged, but five of the ships were disabled. One, the USS Keokuk, sank the next morning. After this failure, federal strategy ...

1863: Encyclopedia II - Culp's Hill - July 1 1863

Culp's Hill was occupied initially on the evening of July 1 by troops of the Union I Corps and XI Corps, along with neighboring Cemetery Hill, as a rallying point from the retreat following the Confederate victory that day north and west of town. Lt. Gen. Richard S. Ewell had discretionary orders to seize the heights south of town and he believed that Culp's Hill was unoccupied and therefore a good target, one that would make the Union position on Cemetery Hill untenable. His third division, under Maj. Gen. Edward "Allegheny" Johnson, had just arrived on the battlefield and Johnson was ordered to t ...
