Eventually the panic and depression spread to Europe, South America and the Far East. No recovery was evident in the United States for a year and a half and the full impact did n ...

1857: Encyclopedia II - Indian rebellion of 1857 - Retaliation -- The Devil's Wind

From the end of 1857, the British had begun to gain ground again. Lucknow was retaken in March 1858. On 8 July 1858, a peace treaty was signed and the war ended. The last rebels were defeated in Gwalior on 20 June 1858. By 1859, rebel leaders Bakht Khan and Nana Sahib had either been slain or had fled. The British adopted the old Mughal punishment for mutiny and sentenced rebels were lashed to the mouth of cannons and blown to pieces. It was a crude and brutal war, with both sides resorting to what would now be described as war crimes. In the end, however, in terms of ...

Field then directed the efforts to the trans-oceanic section with Charles Tilston Bright as chief engineer. A special survey was made along the proposed route of the cable and revealed that the proposed route was possible. The cable consisted of a strand of seven copper wires, each weighing 107 pounds per nautical mile (26 kg/km), covered with three coats of gutta-percha, ...

Juanita Brooks, author of a book on the tragedy, concluded, "The complete—the absolute—truth of the affair can probably never be evaluated by any human being; attempts to understand the forces which culminated in it and those which were set into motion by it are all very inadequate at best" (Brooks, p. 223). Brooks did offer some ideas of what helped to contribute to the tragedy. Among these ideas was the presence of a large contingent of United States troops marching toward Utah Territory in the summer of 1857. Brigham Young, the ...
