1808: Encyclopedia - U.S. presidential election, 2004

The U.S. presidential election of 2004 was won by the incumbent President, Republican George W. Bush, who defeated his main rival, Democratic Senator John F. Kerry of Massachusetts. One of the main issues was the conduct of the War on Terror. Bush defended the actions of his administration, while Kerry contended that the war had been fought incompetently, and that the Iraq War was a distraction from the War on Terror, not a part of it. The popular vote election took place on Election Day, November 2, but it was not until the ne ...

1808: Encyclopedia - U.S. presidential election, 2000

The U.S. presidential election of 2000 was one of the closest elections in U.S. history, decided by only 527 votes in the swing state of Florida. On election night, the media prematurely declared a winner twice based on exit polls before finally deciding that the Florida race was too close to call. It would turn out to be a month before the election was finally certified after numerous court challenges and recounts. Republican candidate George W. Bush won Florida's 25 electoral votes by a razor-thin margin of the popular ...

The Nyingma tradition is the oldest of the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism (the other three being the Kagyu, Sakya and Gelug). "Nyingma" literally means "ancient," and is often referred to as the "school of the ancient translations" or the "old school" because it founded on the first translations of Buddhist scriptures from Sanskrit into Tibetan, in the eighth century. 1808: Encyclopedia II - James Madison - Presidential years 1809-1817

British insults continued, especially the practice of using the Royal Navy to intercept unarmed American merchant ships and "impressing" (seizing) all sailors who might be British subjects for service in the British navy. Madison's protests were ignored, so he helped stir up public opinion in the west and south for war. One argument was that an American invasion of Canada would be easy and would be a good bargaining chip. Madison carefully prepared public opinion for what everyone at the time called "Mr. Madison's War," but much less time and money ...

1808: Encyclopedia - U.S. presidential election, 1860

The U.S. presidential election of 1860 is widely considered to be a realigning election. The nation had been divided through most of the 1850s on the issue of slavery, with Northerners and Southerners disagreeing over whether or not it should be expanded to the territories, and fighting for each new state admitted to the Union. In 1860, this issue finally came to a head, bringing Abraham Lincoln and the Republican party to power, while it ...

1808: Encyclopedia II - Charles Babbage - Life

Charles Babbage was born in England most likely at 44 Crosby Row, Walworth Road, London. There is quite a discrepancy over the date of Babbage's birth. It was first published in The Times obituary as December 26, 1792. However, days later a nephew of Babbage wrote to say that Babbage was born precisely one year earlier, in 1791. Later evidence, from St. Mary's Newington, London, proved that Babbage was born on January 6, 1792. The reliabi ...

1808: Encyclopedia II - Polish cavalry - Cavalry charges and Nazi propaganda

Apart from countless battles and skirmishes in which the Polish cavalry units used the infantry tactics, there were 16 confirmed cavalry charges during the 1939 war. Contrary to common belief, most of them were successful. The first of them, and perhaps the best known, happened on September 1, 1939, during the Battle of Krojanty. During the action elements of the Polish 18th Uhlans Regiment met a large group of German infantry resting in a woods near the village of Krojanty. Colonel Mastalerz decided to take the enemy by surprise and immediately ordered a cavalry ...
