The islands were first settled by France, in 1764, when she established a colony at Port Louis, on East Falkland's Berkeley Sound coast. 1594: Encyclopedia II - Culture of Romania - Historical evolution

Culture of Romania - The beginnings. The Origin of Romanians is highly disputed. Few written records from the Dark Ages shed any light on the subject. Two things are sure: Romanian is a Romance language. Moreover, some degree of cultural descent from Ancient Rome is clear from the customs and affinities with the other Romance nations. The Romanian (Vlach) people that appears on records from the 10th century on is already Christian, and Christianity seems to have been adopted here early on, u ...

1594: Encyclopedia II - Fetus - Circulatory system

The circulatory system of a human fetus works differently from that of born humans, mainly because the lungs are not in use: the fetus obtains oxygen and nutrients from the mother through the placenta and the umbilical cord. Blood from the placenta is carried by the umbilical vein. About half of this enters the ductus venosus and is carried to the inferior vena cava, while the other half enters the liver proper from the inferior border of the liver. The branch of the umbilical vein that supplies the right lobe of the liver firs ...

1594: Encyclopedia II - Belgrade - Geography

Belgrade is situated in South-Eastern Europe, on the Balkan Peninsula. It lies at the point where the river Sava merges into the Danube, on the slope between two alluvial planes. The river waters surround it from three sides, and that is why since ancient times it has been the guardian of river passages. Because of its position it was properly called "the gate" of the Balkans, and "the door" to Central Europe. The city's main traffic artery stretches from Kalemegdan, along Knez Mihailova St ...

1594: Encyclopedia II - Figured bass - Figured bass notation

A part notated with figured bass consists of a bass-line notated with notes on a musical staff plus added numbers and accidentals beneath the staff to indicate at what intervals above the bass notes should be played, and therefore which inversions of which chords are to be played. 1594: Encyclopedia II - Martin Frobisher - The third voyage

Meantime the faith of the queen and others remained strong in the productiveness of the newly discovered territory, which she herself named META INCOGNITA, and it was resolved to send out a larger expedition than ever, with all necessaries for the establishment of a colony of 100 men. Frobisher was again received by the queen at Greenwich, and her Majesty threw a fine chain of gold around his neck. On 31 May 1578 the expedition, consisting in all of fifteen vessels, left Harwich, and sailing by the English Channel on 20 June reached t ...

1594: Encyclopedia II - Martin Frobisher - The second voyage

The story, at any rate, was successful. The next year a much bigger expedition than the former was fitted out. The queen lent the ship Aid from the royal navy and provided £1000 towards the expenses of the expedition. A Company of Cathay was established, with a charter from the crown, giving the company the sole right of sailing in every direction but the east. Frobisher was appointed high admiral of ...

In 1580 Frobisher was employed as captain of one of the queen's ships in preventing the plans of Spain to assist the Irish in their resistance of encroaching English rule, and in the same year obtained a grant of the reversionary title of clerk of the royal navy. In 1585 he commanded the Primrose, as vice-admiral to Sir Francis Drake in his expedition to the West Indies, and when soon afterwards the country was threatened with invasion by the Spanish Armada, Frobisher's name was one of four mentioned by the lord high admiral in ...

1594: Encyclopedia II - The Merchant of Venice - Shylock and the anti-Semitism debate

The play is frequently staged today, but is potentially troubling to modern audiences due to its central themes, which can easily appear anti-Semitic. Critics still argue over whether the play is itself anti-semitic, or that it is merely a play about anti-semitism. The Merchant of Venice - The anti-Semitic reading. English society in the 1600s was undeniably anti-Semitic. English Jews had been expelled in the Middle Ages and were not permitted to return until the rule of Oliver Cromwell. Jews were presente ...

1594: Encyclopedia II - Tarquinio Merula - Music and influence

Merula was a key figure in the early development of several forms which were to mature later in the Baroque era, such as the cantata, the aria, the sonatas da chiesa and da camera, variations on a ground bass, and the sinfonia. In sacred music Merula followed the lead of Monteverdi, and often used the techniques of the elder composer; however he also did some new things, such as writing motets for solo voice accompanied by strings. His publications of 1639, 1640, and 1652 include masses which are written using ostinato basses, includi ...

1594: Encyclopedia II - The Merchant of Venice - Pederasty

Many observers have interpreted the relationship between Antonio and Bassanio to be paederastic. Contemporary historians said that the practice experienced a revival in the city states during the Italian Renaissance as ancient Greek documents idealizing such relationships were translated and available to commoners for the first time in nearly one thousand years. Antonio's unexplained depression — "I know not why I am so sad" — and utter devotion to Bassanio has led some throughout the centuries to say that he is deeply in love wit ...
