Edward married twice; he divorced his first wife Catherine Fillol (disowning her and her children) around 1535 and married Anne Stanhope who bore him nine children. Born at Rossall, Lancashire, in 1532, the third son of John Allen, at the age of fifteen in 1547 he entered Oriel College, Oxford, graduated B.A. in 1550, and was elected Fellow of the College.
