Our Lady of Guadalupe - Traditional Legend of the Virgin of Guadalupe. The Nican Mopohua is considered to be the "primordial account" of the apparition because it is written in the indigenous Nahuatl language. It describes the 1531 meeting between La Virgen and Saint Juan Diego on Tepeyac. In the Nican Mopohua, "it had been ten years since [...] Mexico had been conquered" when Juan Diego, a widowed convert to Roman Catholicism, was on his way to "attend to divine things" when, upon passing the hill ...

1531: Encyclopedia II - Grimstad - History

Grimstad lies within the boundaries of the ancient parish of Fjære. It is reportedly first mentioned as a harbour in the 1500s. Eight years after he was deposed, Christian II of Denmark & Norway (1513 – 1523)) attempted to recover his kingdoms. A tempest scattered his fleet off the Norwegian coast, and on October 24, 1531, they took refuge at Grimstad. On July 1, 1532, he surrendered to his rival, King Frederick I of Denmark, in exchange for a promise of safe conduct. King Frederick failed to honor his promise and imprisoned Christian until he died. An inn is recorded at Grimstad as early as 1607. In ...

1531: Encyclopedia II - Bernhard Rothmann - Overview

In the late 1520s Bernard Rothmann became the leader for religious reform in the city of Münster. In his sermons he condemned Catholic doctrines such as purgatory and the use of images, as well as the low morals of the priests. He suffered censure of the Catholic bishop in 1531, and afterwards denied the authority of the Catholic Church and openly aligned himself with the Reformed faith. In January of 1532, he published an evangelical creed, and gained the backing of the city authorities. In the treaty of February 14, 1533, Münster was rec ...

1531: Encyclopedia II - Bernhard Rothmann - Rothmann's Legacy

The time from Rothmann's believers' baptism until his death was about a year and a half. He had adopted Anabaptist principles less than a year earlier, and had preached "evangelical" and "Reformed" doctrine from 1531. From his beginning to condemn certain Catholic practices until the end of his ministry comprises only about six or seven years. Yet Bernhard Rothmann deserves a place in the foundations of 16th century Anabaptism. Rothmann influenced the south German Anabaptists through Pilgram Marpeck, who borrowed some of his Verman ...

According to tradition, Querétaro was founded on 25 July 1531. On this date Spanish Conquistador Hernán Pérez Bocanegra y Córdoba arrived with Otomí Indian Conín, the chief Jilotepec, to found the town of Querétaro. When the Spanish landed in 1531, Peru's territory was the nucleus of the highly developed Inca civilization. Centered at Cuzco, the Inca Empire extended over a vast region, stretching from northern Ecuador to central Chile. Pizarro, however, succeeded in capturing and executing Inca Emperor Atahualpa during the Battle of Cajamarca on November 16, 1532. By March 23, 1534, Pizarro and the Spanish had refounded the I ...

Huldrych Zwingli

1531: Encyclopedia II - Philipp Melanchthon - Discussions on Lord's Supper and Justification

He took an important part in the discussions concerning the Lord's Supper which began in 1531. He approved fully of the Formula of Concord sent by Bucer to Wittenberg, and at the instigation of the Landgrave of Hesse discussed the question with Bucer in Cassel, at the end of 1534. He eagerly labored for an agreement, for his patristic studies and the Dialogue (1530) of Œcolampadius had made him doubt the correctness of Luther's doctrine. Moreover, after the death of Zwingli and the change of the political situation his earlier scruples in r ...

Josel worked for the welfare of his people to the last, dying suddenly in March 1554. 1531: Encyclopedia II - Russian architecture - Middle Muscovite period 1530–1630

In the sixteenth century, the key development was the introduction of tented roof into brick architecture. Tent-like roof construction is thought to have originated in the Russian North, as it prevented snow from piling up on wooden buildings during long winters. In wooden churches (even modern ones) this type of roof has been very popular. The first ever tent-like church built in brick is the Ascension church of Kolomenskoe (1531), designed to commemorate the birth of Ivan the Terrible. Its design was prone to most unusual interpreta ...
