1494: Encyclopedia II - Italian Wars - War of the League of Cambrai 1508–16
Meanwhile, Pope Julius II was more concerned with curbing the territorial expansion of the Republic of Venice, and in 1508 formed the League of Cambrai, in which France, the Papacy, Spain and the Holy Roman Empire agreed to restrain the Venetians. Although the League destroyed much of the Venetian army at the battle of Agnadello in 1509, it failed to capture Padua, and in 1510, Julius, now regarding France as a greater threat, left the League and allied himself with Venice. Following a year of fighting over the Romagna, during which the Vene ...

1494: Encyclopedia - Blood libel against Jews

Blood libels were the false accusations that Jews used human blood, especially the blood of Christian children, in religious rituals. In many cases, anti-Semitic blood libels served as the basis for a blood libel cult, in which the alleged victim of human sacrifice was worshipped as a Christian martyr. The first recorded instance was in the writings of Apion, who claimed that the Jews sacrificed Greek victims in the Temple, but there were no other incidents recorded from the ancient Greeks until the 12th century, when blood lib ...

1494: Encyclopedia II - Blood libel against Jews - Descriptions of alleged ritual murder

In general, the "procedure" for the alleged sacrifice was something like this: a child, normally a boy who had not yet reached puberty, was kidnapped or sometimes bought and taken to a hidden place (the house of a prominent member of the Jewish community, a synagogue, a cellar, etc.) where he would be kept hidden until the time of his death. Preparations for the sacrifice included the gathering of attendees from n ...

1494: Encyclopedia II - Blood libel against Jews - Actual Jewish practices regarding blood and sacrifice

The descriptions of torture and human sacrifice in the anti-Semitic blood libels run contrary to many of the actual teachings of Judaism. Most obviously, the Ten Commandments in the Jewish Torah forbid murder. In addition, the use of blood (human or otherwise) in cooking is prohibited by Kashrut, or Kosher laws. Blood and other discharges from the human body are ritually unclean (Lev 15). Blood from slaughtered animals may not be consumed, and must be drained out of the animal and buried (Lev 17:12-13). According to the book of Leviti ...
