1349: Encyclopedia II - Gediminas Grand Duke of Lithuania - Domestic affairs

His internal administration bears all the marks of a wise ruler. He protected the Catholic as well as the Orthodox clergy, encouraging them both to civilize his subjects; he raised the Lithuanian army to the highest state of efficiency then attainable; defended his borders with a chain of strong fortresses; and built numerous towns including Vilnius, the capital (first mentioned ca 1321). At first he moved the capital city to the newly built city of Trakai, but in 1323 re-established a permanent capital in Vilnius, ...

1349: Encyclopedia II - Moravia - People

The Moravians today are a Slavic ethnic group who speak various dialects of Czech. Some Moravians regard themselves as an ethnically distinct group, others consider themselves to be ethnically Czech. In the census of 1991 1,362,000 (13.2%) of the Czech population described themselves as being of Moravian nationality. In the census of 2001 this number had decreased to 380,000 (3.7% of the population). Sigmund Freud was born in Freiberg, Moravia (now Příbo ...

1349: Encyclopedia II - Gediminas Grand Duke of Lithuania - Incorporation of Slavic lands

While on his guard against his northern foes, Gediminas from 1316 to 1340 was aggrandizing himself at the expense of the numerous Slavonic principalities in the south and east, whose incessant conflicts with each other wrought the ruin of them all. Here Gedymin's triumphal progress was irresistible; but the various stages of it are impossible to follow, the sources of its history being few and conflicting, and the date of every salient event exceedingly doubtful. One of his most important territorial accretions, the principality of Halych-Volynia; was obtained by the marriage of his son Lubart ...

1349: Encyclopedia II - Black metal - Subforms

Black metal - Faggoth. Faggoth is supposedly a musical genre that is similar to, but distinct from, black metal. In reality, faggoth is not a real genre, but a derogatory term (a portmanteau of the words "faggot" and "goth") used by black metal fans to insult bands from various other musical genres, marking them as inferior to black metal. The term faggoth is rarely used outside of the black metal scene, and it appears that no bands or musicians actually categorize themselves as faggoth. Black metal ...

1349: Encyclopedia II - Medieval music - Overview

Medieval music - Style and trends. The general trend in Medieval music is toward complexity in harmony, rhythm, text, and orchestration. At the start of the era, music is monophonic and homorhythmic with a unison sung text and no notated instrumental support. The notation system is weak, and rhythm cannot be specified. The simplicity of chant, with unison voice and natural declamation, is most common. Polyphony and notation develop. Harmony, in consonant intervals of fourths, fifths, and octaves, begins to be see ...

1349: Encyclopedia II - History of Bavaria - Early settlements and Roman Raetia

There are numerous palaeolithic finds in Bavaria. The earliest known inhabitants that are mentioned in written sources were a people, probably Celts, participating in the widespread La Tène culture, whom the Romans subdued just before the opening of the Christian era, founding colonies among them and including their land in the provinces of Raetia and Noricum. The Roman centre of administration for this area was Castra Regina, now and since the middle ages known as Regensburg.1 ...

1349: Encyclopedia II - History of Bavaria - Revolutionary and Napoleonic

In 1792 French revolutionary armies overran the Palatinate; in 1795 the French, under Moreau, invaded Bavaria itself, advanced to Munich — where they were received with joy by the long-suppressed Liberals — and laid siege to Ingolstadt. Charles Theodore, who had done nothing to prevent wars or to resist the invasion, fled to Saxony, leaving a regency, the members of which signed a convention with Moreau, by which he granted ...

1349: Encyclopedia II - Valle Crucis Abbey - Early History

The abbey suffered a serious fire soon after its founder's death in 1236; traces of burning are visible on the lower stonework of the church and the south range. Substantial rebuilding (distinguished by putlog holes for the ends of the wooden scaffolding) had already taken place when the abbey found itself on the losing side during Edward I's Welsh campaigns in 1276-1277 and 1282-1283, although subsequent compensation enabled it to flourish for much of the following century. Repairs to the church, notably the reconstruction of the magnificen ...

1349: Encyclopedia II - History of Bavaria - Migrations and early Medieval Period

During the 5th century the Romans in Noricum and Raetia came under increasing pressure from an influx of foreign peoples. One theory of the etymological origins of the name "Bavarian" is that Bai(o)arii was derived from Bai(a)haim, which is thought to be equivalent with the land of the antique tribe of the Boii and modern Bohemia (Reindel 1981). Also In modern Caucasian Avar language "Bo" = Army-Land-Country and "Avar" meaning "Land of ...

Republican institutions replaced royal ones in Bavaria during the upheavals of November 1918. Provisional National Council Minister-President Kurt Eisner declared Bavaria to be a free state on November 7, 1918. Munich became a hotbed of extremism: a Bavarian Soviet Republic, the Münchner Räterepublik, had a short-lived existence, but inspired fearful reactions: the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch involving Erich Ludendorff and Adolf Hitler took place in the same city. For most of the Weimar Republic, though, Bavaria was dominated by the relat ...

After the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the Declaration of Rights of Peoples of Russia encouraged the various nationalities in the Russian Empire to gain their independence, Moldova became an independent Republic on December 2, 1917. On the request of the new Moldovan administration ("Sfatul tării"), on December 13, Romanian troops entered Bessarabia. On March 27, 1918 there was a vote for the unification with Romania. Formerly ruled by Romania as part of the principality of Moldavia, Eastern Moldova was occupied by the Soviet Union (with consent from Nazi Germany) in 1940 as a consequence of a secret protocol attached to the 1939 Nazi-Soviet Pact. On 2 August 1940, the Soviet government created the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic (Moldavian SSR), with its capital at Chisinau (Kishinëv, in Russian), by joining most of Eastern Moldavia (known as Bessarabia during its occupation by the Russian Empire) with a portion of the Moldavian ASSR (the rest was a ...

The territory stayed within the USSR after WWII as the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic and the state had a brutal denationalization policy toward the native Romanian population. The Soviets massacred, imprisoned, and deported to Siberia almost a million innocent people whose "crime" was just trying to change the population structure of Moldova. Secret police struck at nationalist groups; the Cyrillic alphabet was imposed on the "Moldavian" language; and ethnic Russians and Ukrainians were encouraged to immigrate to the Moldavian SSR, esp ...
