1133: Encyclopedia - Honen Shonin

Hōnen, a.k.a Honen Bo Genku, (法然; 1133-1212) is credited with the establishment of Jōdo (Pure Land) Buddhism as an independent sect in Japan. He initially studied at the famous temple of Enryakuji atop Mount Hiei, later leaving it to spread his own unique message of salvation to the general population. Hōnen is easily one of the most famous figures in Japanese Buddhism and, unlike his now well-known disciple Shinran, he was renowned in his own day. Honen Shonin - Life. 1133: Encyclopedia II - Jodo Shinshu - The Founder: Shinran

Shinran originally practiced as a low-status monk, in a Tendai nembutsu worship hall. Then, just one-year before finishing the twenty-one year Tendai training course, he left the temple on Mount Hiei in disillusionment over his capacity for spiritual practice and also in disgust at widespread monastic corruption. Following a vision Shinran sought out and studied with Honen (1133-1212), founder of the Jodo Shu sect and another Tendai drop-out, who taught the exclusive and single practice of saying the name of Amida Buddha. Six y ...

1133: Encyclopedia II - Henry II of England - Biography

He was born on 5 March 1133 at Le Mans to the Empress Matilda and her second husband, Geoffrey the Fair, Count of Anjou. Brought up in Anjou, he visited England in 1149 to help his mother in her disputed claim to the English throne. Prior to coming to the throne he already controlled Normandy and Anjou on the continent; his marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine on 18 May 1152 added her holdings to his, including Touraine, Aquitaine, and Gascony. He thus effectively became more powerful than the king of France — with an empire (the Ang ...

1133: Encyclopedia II - Honen Shonin - Life

Hōnen was born in 1133 in Mimasaka (present day Okayama Prefecture) and became a trainee monk at the Tendai complex on Mt. Hiei, aged twelve, after the murder of his father. During his time on Mt. Hiei he studied the Buddhist canon extensively and gained a reputation as an excellent scholar. However Hōnen's vigorous studies appear to have been motivated by a dissatisfaction with the Tendai path in which he was ostensibly training. According to biographers, one day he came across Genshin's Ojoyoshu, which aroused his interest in Pure ...

1133: Encyclopedia II - Bishop of Carlisle - Early Times

The original territory of the diocese first became a political unit in the reign of King William Rufus (1087-1100), who made it into the Earldom of Carlisle, which covered most of the counties of Cumberland and Westmorland. In 1133, during the reign of his successor, Henry I, a diocese was erected in the territory of the earldom, the territory being subtracted from the Diocese of Durham. This happened despite there being locally a strong Celtic element that looked to Glasgow for episcopal administration. As the first bishop, the king secured ...

1133: Encyclopedia II - Iceland - History

Iceland remained one of the world's last larger islands uninhabited by humans until it was discovered and settled by immigrants from Scandinavia and from Ireland and Scotland during the 9th and 10th centuries. The Libellus Islandorum, written in 1122-1133 claims that the Norwegian Ingólfr Arnarson was the first man to settle in Iceland (Reykjavík) in 870. The families were accompanied by servants and slaves, some of whom were Celts from Scotland and Ireland (known as Westmen to the Norse). Some literary evidence suggests that Irish monks may have been living in Iceland before the arrival of Norse settlers, but no arch ...

1133: Encyclopedia - King Arthur

King Arthur is an important figure in the mythology of Great Britain, where he appears as the ideal of kingship in both war and peace. He is the central character in the cycle of legends known as the Matter of Britain. There is disagreement about whether Arthur, or a model for him, ever actually existed. In the earliest mentions and in Welsh texts, he is never given the title "King." Early texts refer to him as a dux bellorum ("war leader"), and High Medieval Welsh texts often call him an ameraudur ("emperor"; the ...
