112 BC: Encyclopedia - Dacia

Dacia, in ancient geography the land of the Daci, a subtribe of the Getae, was a large district of Central Europe, bounded on the north by the Carpathians, on the south by the Danube, on the west by the Tisa (Tisza river, in Hungary), on the east by the Tyras (Dniester or Nistru, now in eastern Moldova). It thus corresponds in the main to modern Romania and Moldova. The capital of Dacia was Sarmizegetusa. The inhabitants of this district are considered as belonging to the Thracian stock. Ancient writers are unanimous in ...

112 BC: Encyclopedia II - Triệu Dynasty - A Vietnamese Dynasty or the First Chinese Domination?

There are two major debates over the categorization of this period in Vietnamese history. 1) According to some historians, Triệu Đà--after whom the dynasty is named--was a Chinese general, not Vietnamese. He was General/Governor of the state of Au Lac, the country named by Thuc Phan An Dương Vương which he covets and conquers. Thus, this First Chinese domination should begin when Triệu Đà seizes Au Lac in 207 BC and end in 111 BC. 2) The historians who consider Triệu Đà to be Vietnamese view his seizure of Au La ...

112 BC: Encyclopedia II - Lucius Cornelius Sulla - In the East. The First Civil War

As the consul of Rome, Sulla prepared to depart once more for the East, in order to fight the first Mithridatic War, by the appointment of the Senate. But he would leave trouble behind him. Marius was now an old man, but he still had the ambition to lead the Roman armies against King Mithridates VI of Pontus. Marius convinced the tribune P. Sulpicius Rufus to call an assembly and revert the Senate's decision on Sulla's command. Sulpicius also used the assemblies to eject Senators from the Senate until there were not enough senators needed to ...

112 BC: Encyclopedia II - Emperor Wu of Han - Further territorial expansion old age and paranoia

Starting about 113 BC, Emperor Wu appeared to begin to display further signs of abusing his power. He began to incessantly tour the commanderies, initially nearby Chang'an, but later extending to much farther places, worshipping the various gods on the way, perhaps again in the search of immortality. He also had a succession of magicians whom he honored with great things, even, in one case, making one a marquess and marrying a daughter to him. (That magician, after he was exposed to be a fraud, however, was executed.) Emperor Wu's expenditur ...

With a lifetime dictatorship in his hands, Sulla was elected consul for the second time in 80 BC, but in the next year he took the decision of stepping out of every political activity and withdraw to a country villa. In this apparent quiet retreat, Sulla's purpose was to write his memoirs, but he ended up surrounded by a troupe of actors, dancers and prostitutes. 112 BC: Encyclopedia II - Triệu Dynasty - Triệu Vu Vương 207 BC-136 BC

In the legends of Trong Thuy and My Chau (also known as "The Magic Bow"), Triệu Đà married his son Trong Thuy to An Dương Vương's daughter My Chau to an attempt to steal a magical bow from his in-laws. He thus defeated An Dương Vương in 207 BC and used the bow to seize control of Au Lac. At that time, Au Lac was a minor state further south of Quangdi and Quangdong in China. Having seized Au Lac, Triệu Đà unified it with the other states controlled and renamed the whole country Nam Việt or Nanyue. Triệu Đà procl ...

While they were distracted by the chaos in Northern China, in the South, (i.e., in Nanyue) the Han did not observe a general by the name Lu Gia rising to power. First, Lu Gia named Triệu Kien Duc (Triệu Minh Vương's eldest son) as the new Emperor to usurp Triệu Áp Vương. Lu Gia's argument is that the current emperor was not of pure Vietnamese blood. The reason Lu Gia selected Triệu Kien Duc was because he was sired by Triệu Minh Vương through one of his Vietnamese concubines. Lu Gia wanted to stir up Vietnamese patriotism at ...

112 BC: Encyclopedia II - Lucius Cornelius Sulla - Early years

Sulla was born into an impoverished branch of the Cornelii gens, or family, of aristocratic patrician stock but without influence in the city. Without any money, Sulla's first years were spent in the backstage of Rome's political elite. The means by which Sulla attained the fortune that enabled him to ascend to senatorial rank are not clear, although some sources refer to family inheritances. In 107 BC, Sulla was nominated quaestor to Gaius Marius, who was taking control of the Roman army in the war against King Jugurtha of Numidia. T ...
