The city was first mentioned in 1117. In 1179 it was detached from the Kraków senior province and attached to the Duchy of Opole. In 1327 duke John I of Oświęcim formed with the western part of Galicia and the duchies of Oświęcim and Zator a vassal state attached to the kingdom of Bohemia. Lat ...

The first inhabitants of Cerdagne probably spoke a language related to the old Basque language and to Aquitanian. Many place names testify to this. In the first millennium BC came the Iberians from the south. Although their identity is still a matter of debate, some theories posit that they were related to the Afro-Asiatic peoples, and that they separated from the Berbers in North Africa and moved into Spain and then further no ...

The word "Dharwad" means a place of rest in a long travel or a small habitation. For centuries, Dharwad acted as a gateway between Malenaadu (western mountains) and Bayalu seeme (plains) and it became a resting place for the travelers. Another theory is, during Vijayanagara rule of Dharwad, there was a ruler by name "Dharav" (1403) and Dharwad got its name from him. There are some inscriptions that refer to Dharwad as Kampana Sthana. Inscriptions found near Durga Devi temple, in Narendra (a village near by) and the local RLS high school date back to 12th century and have references to Dharwad. This p ...

1117: Encyclopedia II - St Magnus Cathedral Kirkwall - The building

The Romanesque Cathedral begun in 1137 is a fine example of Norman architecture, attributed to masons from Durham Cathedral. The masonry uses red sandstone quarried near Kirkwall and yellow sandstone from the island of Eday, often in alternating courses or in a chequerboard pattern to give a polychrome effect. As completed during the 12th century, the original Cathedral had three aisled bays to the chancel with the bay at the east end shorter, and apsed in a similar way to the original apse at Durham, a transept with single east chape ...

1117: Encyclopedia II - Saint Sophia Cathedral in Novgorod - History

The five-domed stone cathedral was built by Vladimir of Novgorod on behest of his father, Yaroslav the Wise, as a sign of gratitude to Novgorodians for their support of Yaroslav's struggle for Kiev. It replaced an even older wooden, 13-domed church built in 989. The sixth (and the largest) dome crowns a tower which leads to a rood-loft. The cupolas are thought to have acquired their present helmet-like shape in the 1150s, when the cathedral was restored after a fire. The interior was painted in the 11th and 12th centuries, but those f ...
