The Council of Sutri (or Synod of Sutri) was called by Pope Gregory VI at the behest of Henry III, Holy Roman Emperor and opened on December 20, 1046, in the hilltown of Sutri. The council was called to resolve the confusion over the papacy. Gregory had, "in all good faith and simplicity", purchased the papacy from Pope Benedict IX in 1044. After the departure of Benedict, the Bishop of Sabina had also declared himself pope, Silvester III. In 1045 Benedict, having not received his pay-off, returned to Rome and renewed his claim ...

1046: Encyclopedia - Culture of Belgium

A discussion of Belgian culture requires discussing both those aspects of cultural life shared by 'all' or most of the Belgians, regardless of what language they speak, and also, the differences between the main cultural communities, the Flemings and the French-speakers from Brussels and Wallonia. Most Belgians tend to view their culture as an integral part of European culture; nevertheless, both main communities tend to make their thousands of individual and collective cultural choices mainly from within their own community, a ...

1046: Encyclopedia II - Colditz Castle - Colditz Castle as Oflag IVc

After the outbreak of World War II the castle was converted into a high security Prisoner of War camp for officers who had become security or escape risks or who were regarded as volksfeindlich, or treasonous against the people. Since the castle is situated on a rocky outcropping above the Mulde river, the Germans believed it to be an ideal site for a high security prison. The larger outer courtyard, known as the Kommandantur, had only two exits and housed a large German garrison. The prisoners lived in an adjacent court ...

1046: Encyclopedia II - List of Korean monarchs - Gojoseon c.2333 BC - 108 BC

Gojoseon cultural artifacts and walled cities are found throughout northern Korea and Manchuria, but it is not clear from archeological evidence when the tribal entity developed into a centralized state. China described it as a state in the 4th century BC, and later records describe it as a kingdom. Hwandan-gogi is a controversial text said to detail ancient Korean history, but its authenticity has been widely questioned. It appears to be partly based on other known "alternative history" texts. The Annals of the Danguns are recorded in Gyuwon Sahwa (1675), which is descr ...
