1032: Encyclopedia II - Tangut Empire - The Tanguts and the Mongols

The Mongol Empire campaigned six times against the Tanguts (1202, 1207, 1209-10, 1211-13, 1214-19, 1225-26). In 1207 Li An-ch'uan submitted to the Mongols, and gave his daughter to Činggis Qaɣan (commonly known as Genghis Khan) in marriage. Li An-ch'uan abdicated, and then died, in 1211. The Mongols asked their allies and tributaries for military aid in the campaign against the Islamic countries, although the Tangut emperor Li Zunxu was willing, his court and in particular his general Aša-gambu recommended against it. When ...

1032: Encyclopedia II - Canton of Neuchâtel - History

The name of the canton goes back to the Roman designation of Novum Castellum (new castle). Rudolph III of Burgundy mentioned Neuchâtel in his will in 1032. The dynasty of Count Ulrich von Fenis took over the town and its territories in 1034. The dynasty prospered and by 1373 all the lands now part of the canton belonged to the count. In 1405 the cities of Bern and Neuchâtel entered a union. The lands of Neuchâtel passed to the lords of Freiburg about a century later, and then in 1 ...

1032: Encyclopedia II - Rulers of Auvergne - Dauphinate of Auvergne

What is by convenience called the dauphinate of Auvergne was in reality the remnant of the county of Auvergne after the usurpation of count William VII the Young around 1155 by his uncle William VIII the Old. The young count was able to maintain his status in part of his county, especially Beaumont, Chamaliers, and Montferrand. Some authors have therefore named William VII and his descendants "counts of Clermont" (although this risks confusion with the county of Clermont in Beauvaisais and the episcopal county of Clermont in Auvergne) ...

1032: Encyclopedia II - House of Capet - The early dynasty

The distant origins of this family are speculative yet seem to originate in the Rhine Valley, east of modern-day France. Cheribert, a nobleman in Neustria is the earliest recorded ancestor of the family, dating before 636. Five generations pass between Cheribert and the next descendent of note, Rutpert I, who became a count in the Upper Rhine Valley and in Wormgau. Four more generations pass until Robert the Strong appears as a count in Paris, Anjou, Blois, Tours, Auxerre, and Nevers. From this ...

1032: Encyclopedia II - Early history of Switzerland - Prehistory

Archeological evidence from the Wildkirchli cave in Appenzell suggests that hunter-gatherers settled in the lowlands north of the Alps by the late Paleolithic. In the Neolithic period, the area was relatively densely populated, as is attested to by the many archeological findings from that period. Remains of pile dwellings have been found in the shallow areas of many lakes. Around 1500 BCE, Celtic tribes settled in the area. The Raetians lived in the ea ...

In 58 BCE, the Helvetii tried to evade migratory pressure from Germanic tribes by moving into Gaul, but were stopped and defeated at Bibracte (near modern-day Autun) by Julius Caesar's armies and then sent back. In 15 BCE, Tiberius and Drusus conquered the Alps, and the region became integrated into the Roman Empire: the Helvetii settlement area became part first of Gallia Belgica and later of the province of Germania Superior, while the east ...

1032: Encyclopedia II - Early history of Switzerland - Christianization and post-Roman era

In the late Roman period in the 3rd and 4th centuries, the christianization of the region began. Legends of Christian martyrs such as Felix and Regula in Zurich probably are based on events that occurred during the persecution of Christians under Diocletian around 298. The first bishoprics were founded in the 4th and 5th century in Basel (documented in 346), Martigny (doc. 381, moved to Sion in 585), Geneva (doc. 441), and Chur (doc. 451). There is evidence from th ...
